I named the Roselle W. Huddilston Family Foundation in honor of my grandmother because she showered me with love when I was a young child. I spent July with my grandparents on their farm in Maine.
Years later I learned she was a suffragette. She did so much to help women win the right to vote that the polls were held back in Orono, Maine to give her the honor of being the first woman to cast a ballot in the national election of 1920. This made her the first woman to vote in America since Maine voted one month before the rest of the nation.
She devoted her life to public health in Maine. She was one of the founders of the American Lung Association. For 12 years, even at age 80, she flew from Bangor, Maine to Los Angeles, CA to attend annual board meetings of the American Lung Association. In 1957, the Roselle W. Huddilston Award was established in her honor. It is the highest award given to someone in public health in Maine.
My grandparents lived on their farm in Orono, Maine for sixty-five years. My grandfather, John H. Huddilston, was Professor Emeritus of Greek, Ancient Civilization, and Art History at the University of Maine. He had earned his PhD at the University of Munich in 1897 in Germany.
Why is the spelling of my last name and my grandparents’ name different? My father changed the spelling of our last name when he was a graduate student at Harvard Business School. Because his name was often misspelled, he changed the spelling.
